Project type
Textile Interactive Installation
Date
February 2024
Location
London
Project Overview
The Second Spring is an immersive space designed to raise awareness about menopause and provide a platform for education, dialogue, and reflection. The project invites audiences of all ages and genders to sit down, engage, and learn about the challenges faced by menopausal individuals, creating a supportive environment where open conversations can take place.
Design Concept
The project challenges societal perceptions of menopause by framing it not as a decline or "end," but as a "second spring"—a time of renewal and empowerment. It aims to shift the narrative surrounding menopause, portraying it as a stage where women can break free from patriarchal expectations and embrace their true selves without judgment. The installation encourages reflection on the mental health issues faced by menopausal women and calls for greater societal recognition and protection of their rights.
Materials and Techniques
At the heart of the installation is an interactive textile sculpture. Large tree branches, symbolizing strength and resilience, are draped with wet-felted wool fabrics, which are secured using coarse jute rope. The wool's soft texture contrasts with the rugged branches, representing the balance between vulnerability and power. Visitors can interact with the installation, further reinforcing the idea of menopause as a transformative and empowering experience.
Social Impact
Beyond its artistic message, The Second Spring serves as a call to action for society to pay more attention to the mental health and rights of menopausal individuals. It provides a platform for those going through or who have experienced menopause to share their stories, while educating those who may never experience it. The project seeks to foster empathy, understanding, and a sense of community, encouraging a more supportive and inclusive approach to women's health and well-being.
